Skin that is itchy and irritated can be the result of numerous common afflictions. The first oatmeal home remedy we will cover today is a simple and effective relief for itchy skin. This remedy works well for chicken pox, bug bites, exczema, shingles and many other causes of itchy skin. The main ingredient for this home remedy is oatmeal. The oatmeal commonly eaten as a breakfast cereal can be used with a little modification, or you can buy colloidal oatmeal that does not require the extra step that cereal oatmeal does.

Colloidal oatmeal is different from breakfast oatmeal only in the fact that it has been ground into a fine powder. You can make colloidal oatmeal from breakfast oatmeal by grinding it into a powder consistency. This can be done by hand but it is easier to use a small kitchen appliance like a coffee grinder, or blender. Simply grind until a fine powder is left, and no whole oats are visible.

The reason that ground oatmeal is referred to as colloid oatmeal is that colloid is the effect that will occur when ground oatmeal is mixed with water. A colloid effect is simply when two separate and different substances meet, mix and are permanently combine into a new substance. The colloid effect we want in this case is achieved by mixing the colloid oatmeal with water.  When mixed with water colloid oatmeal forms a milk like substance. There should be no visible powder that is not mixed and changed into this milky substance. This colloid oatmeal substance has many benefits to offer.

To aid in the treatment of dry itchy irritated skin in more than one place on the body like a sunburn, chicken pox, shingles etcetera, you will draw a bath. Correct temperature is important because water that is to hot can cause more skin damage and irritation. Mix 5 to 8 cups of colloidal oatmeal to the bath and mix well. Then soak in the bath for approximately fifteen minutes, being sure to cover all problem areas of the skin. Exit the bath and dry with care.  Avoid abrasive action against the irritated skin. After all that will undo all the great moisturizing and soothing the colloidal oatmeal bath accomplished. This bath can be repeated two or three times a day with no negative side effects.
